My Finger clicks and locks….

Do you have a finger or thumb that “clicks” or “locks”?

Trigger finger, or trigger thumb, is a common issue characterised by clicking or locking sensations in the finger or thumb. It occurs due to inflammation or thickening of the tendon responsible for bending these digits as it passes through the palm's pulley system.

Causes of Trigger Finger: Trigger finger develops from repetitive or prolonged gripping actions, or an injury, leading to inflammation of the flexor tendons. It can affect a single digit or multiple fingers, arising suddenly from intense activities like garage cleaning or gardening, hedge trimming, power tools or gradually from repetitive tasks.

Symptoms: Typical symptoms include tenderness in the palm and middle knuckle, along with clicking or locking sensations when bending or straightening the affected digit. In severe cases, the digit may become stuck in a flexed position, necessitating manual extension.

Treatment: Resting the affected tendon is crucial, often achieved through the use of thermoplastic splints tailored to the patient and the patient's lifestyle. Hand therapists also provide guidance on massage techniques and passive exercises.

In some instances, additional interventions like cortisone injections or referrals to hand surgeons may be necessary. The overarching goal of hand therapy is to alleviate symptoms, provide rest to the affected structures, and address underlying issues to prevent recurrence.
