Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Symptoms and Treatment Options

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand, becomes compressed or squeezed at the wrist. This compression can lead to numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain in the hand and wrist.

Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome often develop gradually and may include:

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle, or ring fingers

  • Pain or discomfort in the hand and wrist, which may radiate up the arm

  • Weakness in the hand, making it difficult to grip objects

  • Difficulty performing tasks that require fine motor skills, such as typing or writing

If left untreated, carpal tunnel syndrome can worsen over time and may even lead to permanent nerve damage. However, there are several treatment options available to help alleviate symptoms and improve hand function.

These treatment options may include:

  • Wrist splints to keep the wrist in a neutral position and reduce pressure on the median nerve

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and inflammation

  • Corticosteroid injections to reduce swelling and relieve pressure on the median nerve

  • Hand therapy exercises to strengthen the muscles in the hand and wrist and improve range of motion

  • Surgery to release the pressure on the median nerve and relieve symptoms in severe cases

If you're experiencing symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plan. With proper management, many people can find relief from their symptoms and improve their hand function.
